It is primarily caused by the accumulation of tartar and harmful bacterial flora beneath the gums. The inflammation it causes leads to a gradual loss of bone around the teeth, and the space between the tooth and the gum deepens , reducing their support and potentially leading to tooth mobility and tooth loss in an already advanced stage. What makes periodontal disease so insidious is that it often progresses painlessly, and by the time it is diagnosed, it is already too late—hence the importance of regular checkups. Furthermore, this disease requires regular monitoring and treatment throughout one’s life, even if it has been stabilized. The potential use of surgical [periodontology](https://parodontologie.ch/fr/) is always after a 1st phase of non-surgical treatment. At the re-evaluation of the latter, the periodontal specialist may have recourse to surgical treatments such as : - Targeted intervention in recalcitrant periodontal pockets and modification of the gum contour to facilitate tooth brushing and the use of interdental accessories. - Reconstruction of bone and gum destroyed by periodontal disease.
