A dental implant is a small pin similar to a screw that will reproduce the role of a dental root. A dental implant is placed under local anesthesia. Most patients describe minor postoperative symptoms that are comparable to or less than those of a normal tooth extraction.
It is practically painless. At most, minor swelling may occur the next day, associated with a hematoma and some discomfort. Of course, these (if any) are relieved by analgesics or anti-inflammatories.
6 to 8 weeks after the surgery, the dental implant is uncovered through the gum and an impression is sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the crown. After a trial period, it is screwed onto the implant, thus restoring the shape and function of the missing tooth durably.
