Treatment of postural imbalances

Even dental treatment can disrupt your bite and postural balance if carried out without taking this into account, especially orthodontics!

Treatment of postural imbalances

Explanations

The masticatory system (including the teeth) is directly involved in your postural balance as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the primary sensors of the postural system.

A minor misalignment of the lower jaw, in the order of a tenth of a millimetre, can significantly impact our posture and cause pain from head to toe, particularly in the back (in almost a third of cases).

Our upper teeth fit together with the lower ones, called dental occlusion. When the occlusion is perfectly balanced, the teeth maintain and stabilize the position of the mandible and thus the craniomandibular position. When the occlusion is not perfectly balanced, the temporomandibular joint is unbalanced and can be excessively strained. If the occlusion is overly disrupted, the body can no longer adapt, and a postural imbalance can occur.

Treatment of postural imbalances

How can you expect to achieve a perfect occlusion without considering how the human body works?

Simply aligning teeth can lead to future suffering if one does not focus on simple, logical and well-thought-out overall treatment. You can be sure that the dentists and orthodontists at PanaDent plan their treatment with due regard for the body as a whole, including posture. If you wish, you can obtain a complete postural assessment (NLS Assessment) from one of our specialists. To encourage you to do so, as the postural analysis is an integral part of our clinical examination necessary to make a diagnosis, it is not invoiced. The usual check-up is free of charge and provides you with crucial information about the mechanical functioning of your body.

Often, an orthodontic problem can be corrected simply by associating a postural correction, such as scoliosis present in 70% of cases, known as Class II. Correcting scoliosis when it corresponds to the orthodontic problem (70%) corrects the dental Class II to a considerable extent. Another case: the phenomenon of a flat foot is also strongly associated with a mandibular deviation and a crossbite. Correct the flat foot, and the crossbite will probably correct itself without orthodontic intervention. Conversely, correction through orthodontics may tend to lock in a flat foot and risk creating further imbalances that may manifest as pain as we age when the body can no longer compensate for the changes.

In the presence of a postural disorder linked to an inadequate dental occlusion, it is then a question of removing the dysfunctions related to the teeth, the mandible and the temporomandibular joints. The general idea is to give the body the dental occlusion it needs to function without tension. That can be done through orthodontic correction (or re-correction), stabilizing a comfortable bite by adding material to the teeth, or simply adjusting the tooth surfaces.
