## Doubt settles in

These fillings were once used for their high resistance
to chewing, but nobody knew how they
would behave over time. Some dental amalgams are composed of 52% mercury (the remaining
being silver, tin, zinc, copper).

In light of studies on the dangers of mercury, many countries have been banning the use of dental amalgams for several years. Similarly, mercury thermometers are no longer manufactured. In the same direction: - Asbestos is prohibited in the building industry, because it causes serious lung pathologies
- Lead-based paints have been removed because of their toxic effects
- Glyphosates will soon follow suit because of their carcinogenic effects...
 
...even though all these substances have been used on a massive scale
for years with no apparent problems. It's only after
several decades of use that certain products can
prove harmful to health. There are no studies that prove that they are harmful to dental amalgams, but there are also no studies that prove that they are not. We are in a grey area, which is partly due to a sampling problem. In fact, it is very difficult to carry out a large-scale study, especially as the symptoms can be very
varied and cross-referenced with other sources of intoxication or ailments

## Teeth break down over time 

 What is fully documented, however, is that after a certain number of years, amalgam tends to increase in volume. This expansion, which is often greater than the dental tissue can tolerate, can lead to tooth fracture. When the fracture involves the roots, the tooth is unfortunately lost. Removing old amalgams, at least those in poor condition, is therefore a way of safeguarding the good health of your teeth and possibly your general health. It's a major act of prevention in the same way that a vaccine protects against disease. Since there is some doubt as to their harmlessness, every possible precaution should be taken when removing amalgam.
