New total denture wearers: Our advice

Following the delivery ofa COMPLETE prosthesis

Congratulations!
We have collaboratively made your new prosthesis.

You will now go through an ADAPTATION PHASE. As this can last up to 8 weeks, it is normal to feel some discomfort initially.

You will also produce more saliva. Don’t panic. That can be corrected after 1 to 2 weeks.

Pain or minor injuries may occur. We will take care of you to make alterations to remove them.

Should the pain return afterwards, do not hesitate to contact us for an additional correction of the prosthesis.

  • Remove and clean the denture after each meal with a soft toothbrush and low-abrasive toothpaste.
  • Twice a week, wash it with dishwashing liquid.
  • Do not sleep with your prosthesis. After cleaning, leave it in a dry place for the night (not in a glass of water).
  • Don’t forget to brush the gums and the back of the tongue once a day with a soft toothbrush.
  • Wet the prosthesis before putting it on (ideally, let it soak for 1 minute in water).
  • If the device should break (wear, accident, etc.), keep all the parts before going to your dentist (repairs may be possible).

As a result of tooth removal or loss, the jawbones begin to “melt” and may even recede. This remodelling is strongest during the first 6 months; however, it continues throughout life. Thus, a “void” is created under the prosthesis and manifests itself by the loss of stability, fixtures and the appearance of pain. It is necessary to fill this void to restore comfort; this is called a REBASING.

Therefore, 6 months after a series of extractions, it is often necessary to “rebase” the prosthesis. Sustainable comfort is only possible after this step.

The changing bone structure and the wear and tear inherent in wearing a prosthesis require MAINTENANCE. For example, it is customary to rebase a prosthesis several times over the years.

If you have any questions, we will be happy to assist you during the adaptation and maintenance phases.
